Eco Schools Committee Meeting: November 5th 2004

Minutes:

  • Shannon, Ross and Kim were welcomed by the rest of the committee.
  • We discussed and noted points to include in the questionnaires for Mrs Cossar and Mrs McGowan.
  • Everyone agreed that because the ICT Suite was closed for the installation of the new computers that I would type up the questionnaires for the committee’s approval.
  • The same was agreed about a memo to Mrs Cossar asking for the committee to be present when meter readings were being taken.
  • We were unable to find out too much about energy efficient light bulbs but one suggestion was that they were not suitable for our school because of the type of lighting we had. Those of us who had access to the internet at home said we would try to find out more for the next meeting.
  • We agreed we would like to relocate the pencil bins to the red area as a recycling area. Mrs Maule is keen to have these bins outside so we will arrange to discuss the matter with her before we do any more.
  • The committee was concerned about the amount of litter appearing in our playground again. It was agreed that a memo should be sent to all litter monitors as we are concerned that some of the monitors are not taking their responsibility seriously.
  • The rota for the lights was reorganised so that Shannon, Kim and Ross could be included. The new rota means Shannon, Kim and Ross will check on Rooms 5 and 6 and Marissa, Andrew and Claire will check on Rooms 8, 9, 10 and 12.
  • As some of the committee members are going to Barcaple next week I agreed to contact Gillian and rearrange the mock assessment. The new date is set for Wednesday of the same week.
  • We looked at our Action Plan and decided who will be responsible for reporting on what. I said we would meet back to discuss this further next week at the same time.

Eco Update October 2004

Hi there!

We thought we should give you an update of how things are going with our Eco-Schools Committee.

Last year we were busy working hard to make our school a more environmentally friendly place. Thanks to all of you we were able to achieve both the Bronze and Silver Awards.

We had lots of fun and helped improve the environment in the process.

We had lots of visitors to the school. Who could forget Anne and her guide dog Pip? They were great.

We collected lots of stamps for the Guide Dogs last Christmas. This is something we can do all year so, as Mrs Gemmell always says, “Keep collecting!”

We also did really well with our recycling of ink cartridges, mobile phones, Christmas Cards, cans and paper. This is still going on so please help us out.

If anyone is still interested in bags of shredding please let us know.

We did lots of things to improve our environment.

Remember the bird boxes we made from trees cut down in South Lanarkshire? You can still see them if you take a walk down Jock’s Burn.

Our Day of Action was a great success. We raised over £1600 through our sponsored Walk Your Age, and by the end of the day we had planted lots and lots of flowers to improve the school grounds.

We have loads of daffodil and crocus bulbs to plant over the next few weeks and we’ll be looking for some willing helpers. Any volunteers?

Just before the October holidays Gillian from Eco-schools came to see how we were getting on. She was really pleased and said we would soon be able to apply for our Green Flag award which is the highest award you can get as an Eco-school.

However, we still have a few things to do and we are going to need everyone’s help.

The first thing you can do to help is to remember to switch off the lights in the classroom when you all go out. This will help us save on energy.

The second is to put your litter in the bin and not drop it on the ground.

In the last few weeks we have noticed more and more litter in the playground. Please help us and the litter monitors by putting it in the bin. Remember, if you see someone dropping litter you should ask them to pick it up and put it in the bin!

When the judges come to decide whether we deserve our Green Flag or not they will be looking closely at the playground and the corridors to see if they are litter free.

They won’t give us the flag if they see any litter lying around anywhere. Please help make Crawforddyke a litter free zone!

Do you remember the Flintstones jingle all about litter? This is our school’s Eco-code and we are going to send a copy to every class to remind them how important this issue is. Please practise singing it because the judges will ask you about it! Everyone will be getting a new copy to put on their classroom wall.

Thanks for your support and we hope to be able to tell you very soon that we have been awarded our Green Flag and have become a fully fledged Eco-school.

Remember we can’t do it without your help. We’re counting on you!

Extract of letter from Eco Schools Manager

21 December 2004

Dear Mrs Wilson, staff, pupils and parents,

Eco Schools Award 2004 – First Green Flag

I am writing to confirm that we are delighted to grant a first Eco Schools Green Flag award to Crawforddyke Primary School. This really is an excellent achievement, so please pass on our congratulations to everyone involved in the school.

Rona and I thoroughly enjoyed our visit to the school, especially meeting and talking with the very confident and knowledgeable Eco Committee. We also enjoyed our rather bracing tour of the school grounds with the committee members! Your site is not an easy one, so well done to all the pupils, staff and janitor for really tackling the litter issue.

We especially liked talking to the other pupils in some of the classes about what they had been doing and hearing Hannah's fabulous 'Flinstones' eco code rap being sung by a number of the classes. We also liked your colourful posters and displays brightening up the corridors and we thought your very 'green' eco notice board was excellent.

The visit went extremely smoothly, so thank you for kindly arranging such an interesting programme for us. We both really enjoyed coming to your school and talking to pupils and staff. Please pass on our thanks to everyone that we met and all those involved throughout the school.

Congratulations and keep up the fantastic eco-work!

Yours sincerely,

Kate Campbell
Eco Schools Manager, Scotland

Fruit and Water Survey

Crawforddyke Primary School

Fruit and Water Survey 2004

Apples were very popular in our survey and were the favourite choice of fruit of most children.

Both red and green apples were very popular with almost all of the children who took part in our survey.

Most children enjoyed the bananas. They were the second most popular type of fruit next to the apples.

The least popular type of fruit in our survey was the dried fruit.

However, some children really enjoyed dried fruit and always chose it over fresh fruit if there was a choice available.

Some children enjoyed the tomatoes. However, these were not liked by a large number of children and were almost as unpopular as the dried fruit.

Most of the children who took part in the survey enjoyed having their bottle of water every day.

Very few children said they did not enjoy being able to have a drink while working in the class.
